Yes, yes, yes to the Interrail pass. I used it to travel to the Swiss Alps this summer - in order to go climb some big mountains. It brings all the romance of the 19th century mountaineering accounts back to life, and that journey round the north side of Lake Geneva is something out of the very best type of dream.

What a wonderful journey, your photos are amazing.

I've not been on a plane for many years (20?). I've travelled by train from Edinburgh to Warsaw; Edinburgh to Regensberg in the south of Germany (journeying alongside the Rhine and Danube) and from Harare (Zimbabwe) to Botswana and by bus from Lilongwe (Malawi) to Harare, via Zambia. Much more adventurous and enjoyable than flying.

I also love travelling by ferry and have travelled by ferry to most of the Scottish islands. Leaving Aberdeen followed by dolphins is amazing and the ferry from Shetland to the mainland takes a detour to a bird colony, these are things that you’d never get on a flight!
